Spend one morning at the Desert Botanical Garden and earn a special desert discovery patch when you learn about the unique relationship between hummingbirds and the plants they visit. Participants will enjoy a hike through the Garden, a hands-on craft, an engaging story, a yummy snack and interactive games--all while learning about the importance of hummingbirds in the desert. Home School Program – Ocotillo!

This new and unique class for home school children ages 6-8 focuses on the premier member of a very small, down-right bizarre family of desert plants – the ocotillo! Join us as we explore the Garden in search of ocotillos and the hummingbirds that pollinate them.  Together, we will discover the extraordinary adaptations that allow this special plant to thrive and support life in the Arizona desert.   A fun, healthy snack and engaging, science-based activities are included.  Limit: 12. An Evening at MacDonald's Ranch–Desert Hayride, Camp Cookout and Family Fun!
Coyotes will howl, owls will hoot, and kids and adults will love this new family outing! Spend an evening under the stars with Garden education staff at MacDonald's Ranch in north Scottsdale. This family event will begin with a 30-minute horse-drawn hayride tour through the beautiful Sonoran Desert to our own private hideout in the wild. Kids will be treated to a good ol' fashioned camp cookout with hot dogs and marshmallows roasted over an open fire, but don't worry, Mom and Dad, there will be plenty of grown up food, too–grilled chicken, hamburgers, veggie options and sides, and don't forget dessert! After dinner, enjoy an evening around the campfire with storytelling, and fun desert-themed activities before catching the hayride back to our cars. Limit 30.

Children's Sculpture Workshop–Be Inspired By Chihuly: The Nature of Glass
If your family enjoyed Chihuly:The Nature of Glass, your child will love the chance to create his or her own Chihuly-inspired sculptures. This special workshop is designed for children ages five to eight with an accompanying adult. Kids will design their own patterns of shape, size and color, and will leave the workshop with at least three completed mini-sculptures. The program includes a fun guided tour highlighting the exhibition sculptures to inspire children’s imaginations. Limit 15.

Family Fun Hike at Javelina Canyon
Enjoy a family fun hike with Garden staff and volunteers at the world's largest city park–South Mountain. Recommended for ages seven and up with an accompanying adult. We will discover the Javelina Canyon Trail, an easy two-mile roundtrip hike, starting from the Beverly Canyon parking lot south of Baseline Road at the end of 46th Street. This beautiful hike will feature interpretation of the diverse plants and wildlife that call South Mountain home. Hike includes plenty of hands-on learning and desert-themed activities. Bottled water and make-your-own trail mix kits are provided. Limit 15.

Spring Break Class for Children: Magnificent Mesquite!
Spend a day at the Desert Botanical Garden discovering how the magnificent desert mesquite tree sounds, feels, looks and tastes in this delightful one-day class for children. Participants will listen to the heartbeat of the tree, act out how mesquite trees suck water from deep underground, learn to identify three types of mesquite trees by touch, and pound their own mesquite flour for making cookies. They will also investigate the mystery behind the perfect little holes commonly found in mesquite bean pods and the elusive beetle that makes them, and create a craft using natural materials from the mesquite tree. Morning snack is provided; children should bring a sack lunch. Limit 12.
