Echinomastus erectocentrus var. acunensis
Acuna Cactus

The Acuna Cactus is an egg-shaped plant with solitary mature stems to 7 inches high, with a diameter to 4 inches. Spines are borne at the base of each tubercule, with 2-4 spines per cluster. The upper spines ascend and converge, with the ends being a reddish-brown. Flowers open at the bases of tubercules in late March and April, and range in color from pink to purple. Fruits are ½ inch long and dry to a tan color, and seeds are black. Immature plants are very different in appearance than mature plants, as they have no central spines. Acuna cacti are found on granite substrates on rounded small hills at elevations ranging from 1300-2000 feet.
